James 2:18 (NIV) - But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
I recently had a conversation with an acquaintance about my thoughts on words and works. Of course this question came because of a book I recently wrote about what leaders say and do. The gist of my response was, as I continue to mature, I pay closer attention to whether my words and my works are aligned. I also pay attention to whether others are doing the same. Where I fail or fall short, I work hard to make immediate corrections. In order to influence others, I realize it is important to align our words, works, and actions.
The beauty is most of the time you don’t need to say anything. You just show by your works and your deeds. For example, you don’t need to say you have faith, you simply show. Yep, many may call you crazy when they see your faith in action. Words could never explain some of the things I have done by faith. Can you recall the last time you acted by faith? No words necessary.
As I seek more wisdom through the Bible, I realize that Jesus’ words and works were always aligned. This is something I thought important enough to learn and practice. As humans, it is a continuous improvement process. Today’s verse is a reminder to show your faith by your deeds. Let your works speak louder than your words.
Dear God,
Thank you for sending your son Jesus to teach me about words and works. That my words and works must align. I pray that all your children continue to work on aligning their words with their works. That they show their faith more by their deeds and their works. I ask this in your son Jesus’ name. Amen!
