Have your cake and eat it too

Matthew 6:24 ( NIV) - No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

It be nice to have all the things I want in this world? Many people including children often day dream about having everything they desire. However, I wonder how many take it one step further to ask what will it cost me to have it all? What will I have to give up? Of course, no one wants to give up anything, they want it all. They want to consume their cake and still expect it to be there a few days later. Think about it, is this possible?

This brought me to think about so many of us desiring all the riches of this world and the riches of God’s Kingdom. Can we have it both ways? Can you really have the things that break God’s laws, that brings you temporary pleasure and yet seek those things for God’s Kingdom? Can you stray from your values for a temporary satisfaction and yet still honor your values? The reality is that many of us try to do this all the time. We want to serve God and man at the same time. We want worldly things that drives us to disobey God’s laws, sell our souls, yet still want salvation and a seat in God’s Kingdom.

We are all human and will be tempted and fall into temptation. However, when reminded which will you choose? You can’t have it both ways. Today’s verse is a reminder that no one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. You cannot have your cake and eat it too.

Dear God,

Thank you for the reminder that I cannot serve two masters. That I must choose. I pray that all your children are reminded that they cannot serve two masters. Either they will hate the one and love the other, or they will be devoted to the one and despise the other. That they cannot serve both God and money. I ask this in your son Jesus’ name. Amen!
