“When obedience ceases to be an irritant and becomes our quest, in that moment God will endow us with power.” - Ezra Taft Benson

John 14:15 (NIV) - If you love me, you will obey what I command.

The word obey seems to at one point turned from a good thing to a bad thing. Some feel if they obey, they are giving in to something against their will. Some feel obeying is a sign of weakness. Think about the peer pressure children undergo daily. They are teased because they are obedient to their teacher, parent or someone of authority. They were taught to be obedient.

Sometimes we ourselves create the confusion about why we should obey and who we should obey. Listen to this advice but don’t listen to someone else. I wonder if we just trained our ears to listen to God, seek him, trust what he tells us to do and just do what he asks. If we listen for his soft voice and yield to his request, how much different our lives would be.

I am the first to admit that obedience is not easy and it is complicated by all the noise in our life. It makes it hard to hear from God. However, when you see the rewards of your obedience time and time again, obedience becomes easier. (See also Exodus 3:11... Moses’ experience.) God loves us and he would never ask us to do something that would not benefit us at the end or that will not benefit the Kingdom. Think about it, he said he works all things out for those who love him. Today’s verse is a reminder that if you love the Lord, you will obey what he commands. No matter how impossible it may seem or whether it made sense or not. If you love him, you obey, you trust and you act on his command.

Dear God,
Thank you for the reminder that if I love you, I will obey your command. I love you, so I obey your every command. No matter what the flesh may think. I pray that all your children remember that to love you is to obey what you command. That to love you is to trust you and to act on what you ask. I ask this in your son Jesus’ name. Amen!
