Courage

“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.”

- Mark Twain

1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV)- Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.

I recently watched an old movie entitled Courageous. It is about four police officers who struggle with their faith, roles as husbands and fathers after tragedy strikes close to home. Together they made a decision that changed their lives. It is not easy living up to so many expectations as parents, children and as a family. It takes courage to take a stand, lean on faith and do the right thing against all odds.

This made me think of courage. Courage is sometimes defined as bravery. It also has been defined as “fear that has said its prayers.” I loved this when I saw it written by Pastor Greg Laurie some time ago. “Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid, it means you don’t let fear stop you.” We all have fears and have exercised courage at one point in our lives.

Courage is required for so many aspects of our life. Courage is needed to do the right thing every single time; it is needed to change; it is needed to always tell the truth; it is needed to handle death and life; it is needed to live a life in integrity; it is needed to grow; it is needed to trust God during the good and the bad; it is needed to wait on God; and it is needed to obey God. It seems courage is necessary to make it through life. Today’s verse is a reminder to be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. I encourage you to read 1 Corinthians 16. Be courageous!

Dear God,
Thank you for the reminder that to make it through life, I must be on my guard, stand firm in my faith, be courageous and strong. I pray that all your children be on guard, stand firm and strong in their faith and are courageous. That no matter how fear may try to get in the way, that they overcome their fears with courage. I ask this in your son Jesus’ name. Amen!
